Our Lady of Guadalupe also known as the Virgin of Guadalupe is a religious icon of great importance deeply embedded in Mexican culture. The story goes that on top of a hill in Tepeyac, Mexico in the year 1531 a holy woman appeared to a man named Juan Diego. She asked him to build her a shrine in the exact spot that he encountered her so he did as he was asked and went to the town's bishop who requested a sign to prove that it was true. The sign came early one December morning when the lady appeared to Juan Diego once more and told him to collect the flowers that were growing on top of the hill. It was an unusual request as flowers did not bloom that time of year but as he reached the hilltop he found a beautiful array of roses. The lady helped him arrange the roses in his cloak. Upon presentation to the bishop, the roses fell out of the cloak to reveal the image of the Virgin Mary. Our Lady to this day remains a figure of powerful significance to Mexico and represents love and compassion.
